The original artwork carved into this handcrafted leather bifold wallet celebrates the beauty of the natural world. Meant to evoke motion, the hand-tooled hummingbird flits amidst sweet-smelling flowers.
Materials
This wallet features original art, and I only made one. Every material used reflects my priority of making it the best it could possibly be.
Process
Like all my work, this wallet was crafted by hand using only traditional methods.
The Making
This wallet began not in the studio but on my front porch. As I watched the hummingbirds visit my feeder and rhododendron blooms, I began to visualize their graceful motions immortalized in leather.
My observations turned to a sketch, which I later carved and tooled into veg-tan leather. After dying the piece, I carefully brush-dyed the background to create a feeling of being immersed in the field of flowers.
Finally, I saddle-stitched the wallet by hand.
